Gallery Opening: Kathy McWaters-Velon

The Gallery at the MCL is thrilled to announce its newest exhibit Intuition is Creative Play by Kathy McWaters-Velon! McWaters-Velon medium is varied papers, inks, dyes, and beads, and her process is printmaking, papermaking, batiking, and beading in her work. 

Her art education started at the School of Art and Design at Rochester Institute of Technology in 1978 where she studied her major in Communication Design and received a Bachelor of Fine and Applied Art degree from  She studied her second major in Education of the Deaf and received her Master of Education from the School of Education at Boston University in 1996. In 1996, she was also trained and certified to be Preschool Montessori Lead Teacher through American Montessori Society.

Artist Statement:

Over the years to on-going presence, I have played a lot with mixed media within the confidence of my own inner creativity by just following my heartfelt intuitions and gathering inspiration from many artists/peers, many arts and craft galleries, museums, and festivals. I dared to encourage myself to leap and found out I have the boldness to give a birth of creative action into my never-ending world of making arts and sharing my delightful results.

Experiences:

2017 & 2023-presence. Teaches Ability Arts Program at River Gallery School in Brattleboro VT.

1997–2006.  Taught PreK-12 Choice-based Art Education and set up Montessori Method 

Strategy in Art Classroom for students with hearing loss at the VT Center for the Deaf 

& Hard of Hearing in Brattleboro VT. 

  1. Mentored as Life Skill Coach/Art Counselor for a Deaf Autistic Young Adult at the Sedona 

Arts Camp for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children in Sedona AZ.

1990–1991. Assisted in two summer arts camps at Vermont Art Exchange in North Bennington VT.

1978–1993, Was graphic designer, quality-control supervisor, and graphic production freelancer 

with the past agencies: Mitchell & Webb, Inc., Winkler Design, Inc., Bene Communication, Inc, 

Hahn International, Inc, and Branagan Production, all in the Boston area.

Professional Affiliations:     

2004-2005. National Art Education Association and Vermont Art Education Association.

Exhibitions:

2023, exhibit of fabric+stitch collages at John G. McCullough Free Library, N Bennington VT.

2019-present, rotating monoprint exhibits at Pangaea’s Restaurant, N Bennington VT.

January 2 – February 28, 2019, a series of 15 artworks, at Whetstone Restaurant, Brattleboro VT. 

June 22 – October 19, 2018,  NTID’s 50th Reunion Exhibit: “50 Artists 50 years”

NTID Dyer Arts Center at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester NY

April 7 – June 30, 2018, VSA Vermont / Flynn Center of the Arts / VABVI’s Exhibition of Artwork   

by Vermont Artists with Disabilities.
