Are You Interested in Joining an Intramural Model United Nations Team?

Vincy Chan, student at Burr & Burton Academy and member of the BBA Model UN team, is interested in bringing the opportunity of a Model United Nations education to a wider range of students in Vermont. This Intramural Model UN club would be open to any student in Vermont, grades 7 – 12.

“Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them to learn more about the principles of the UN and how it functions. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts – including at the UN itself – participated in Model UN as students.”

The value of participation in Model UN goes beyond teaching the principles of the United Nations. The club teaches students the importance of civic engagement, teamwork, discerning research, and speech and debate skills. The education gained by being active on a Model UN team can set one apart in any career moving forward.

“For this program I’m hoping to help teach students who are civically minded about Model UN (especially if their school does not offer it). We would go over procedural things, debate, and discuss solution building. What I’m hoping to do is help students prepare for conferences when the school year starts, and of course if they’re interested, I’m happy to connect them with conferees they could attend.”

Few secondary schools in the state of Vermont offer Model UN as an extracurricular option, but Vincy believes that all students should have the opportunity to learn what is taught by the program, regardless of their enrollment. An intramural club would give the Model UN education to students who are enrolled in schools without a Model UN program, or to students who are homeschooled. An intramural club would also enable students from across the state to connect with one another, share insights, and form friendships that they would otherwise not be able to gain.
