J. David Moore started the “Paper Hugs” project in 2021, hoping to combat loneliness in Bennington County during the Valentine’s Day season. Through the years, the project has delivered nearly 18,000 Valentine’s Day cards, or “paper hugs”, to 18 area organizations. Recipients have included folks who benefit from services by SVMC Hospital, Meals on Wheels, senior centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and assisted living centers in Bennington County.
As a direct result of this “Paper Hugs” effort, other individuals and organizations have begun organizing campaigns to spread love to their local nursing homes in Hoosick Falls, NY; Memphis, TN; Boston, MA; Philadelphia, Bucks County, PA; and the US Virgin Island of St. Croix.
Participating businesses and organizations that have contributed to the Paper Hugs campaign in Bennington County include:
- The Federated Church of East Arlington
- The St. James Episcopal Church
- St. Peter’s Episcopal Church
- Martha Canfield Library
- Manchester Community Library
- Arlington High School
- Fischer Elementary School
- Bennington Community Market
- The Angry Egg
- The Avocado Pit
- The Woodford Market
If you would like to contribute to the effort this year, stop by the Manchester Community Library between February 1st and February 10th. Supplies will be available in the Young Adult Loft during Library hours to construct your Paper Hugs. A collection box will remain at the MCL Help Desk until February 11th.
